50Hertz is one of Germany’s four transmission system operators and the central operating company of the Eurogrid Group. The company operates the high-voltage transmission grid in northern and eastern Germany and ensures the safe and reliable transport of electricity around the clock. Approximately 18 million people live within the 50Hertz grid area, including Germany’s two largest cities, Berlin and Hamburg. With more than 10,000 kilometers of transmission lines, 50Hertz connects power generation facilities, consumption centers, and neighboring European countries. In doing so, the company makes a significant contribution to the stability of the power system and to security of electricity supply in Germany and across Europe.
Actively Shaping the Energy Transition
The transformation of the energy system is creating new demands on electricity infrastructure. Renewable energy sources are increasingly becoming the backbone of energy supply, while electrification and digitalization continue to drive up electricity demand.50Hertz is actively shaping this transition and pursuing an ambitious goal:by 2032, it aims to integrate the equivalent of 100 percent renewable energy safely into both the grid and the power system. In doing so, the company is taking a leading role in the development of a climate-neutral energy system. As part of Germany’s network development plan, 50Hertz continuously invests in expanding and modernizing its infrastructure. New transmission lines, substations, and digital technologies create the conditions needed to transport renewable energy efficiently while maintaining the high stability of the power system.
From the North and Baltic Seas to the European Power Grid
Offshore wind energy plays a particularly important role. By connecting offshore wind farms in the North Sea and Baltic Sea, 50Hertz creates the conditions necessary for safely integrating large volumes of renewable energy into the power system. At the same time, the company is committed to advancing an increasingly interconnected European energy system. Together with its partners, 50Hertz develops innovative solutions that combine offshore wind energy with cross-border electricity transmission.
